YAKUT DIAMONDS WILL BE MINED BY UNDERGROUND METHODS
In Russia 49 diamond deposits are included in the State Register of Mineral Reserves. The major share of the proven diamond reserves (approximately 90 %) sits in the territory of Yakutia, where they are mined commercially by ALROSA Joint Stock Company. Almost all Yakutian diamonds are mined at hard-rock deposits by surface mining methods. However, after many years of intensive mining several major diamond pipes including the Mir (World), Internatsionalnaya (International) and Aikhal have been either completely mined out or entered the closing stage of their life (e.g. the Udachnaya (Lucky) diamond pipe).


    To keep the production of Yakutian diamonds at the current level ($ 2,153 million USD/year) it is necessary to constantly make good the loss of the retired mine capacities. . Despite the wide-scale exploration currently performed by ALROSA and a significant number of new kimberlite pipes recently discovered in the Yakutian diamond province, mining of the newly discovered diamond deposits is handicapped by a number of factors, including significant remoteness of the newly discovered deposits from the existing infrastructure, severe climate, complicated geological structure of ore bodies, as well as the necessity to carry out extensive development processes using new mining methods and kimberlite...
